Tips for Successful TEFL

10. Make the students read the whole exercise before they write anything.
Why:
• It is usually easier to choose the right answer when the context in whole is familiar.
• Sometimes the variants that suit the blank are quite opposite and only knowing what this exercise is about in a whole can help make a right choice.

11. Ask students to brainstorm before a speaking or a writing activity – come up with as many words as possible on certain topic.
Why:
• A list of words related to the topic will help students generate more varied ideas, aspects of this topic.
• Having useful vocabulary written down in front of you usually helps to be more fluent and to use it more actively.

12. Keep the pace during the lesson, so it doesn’t become boring. Alternate activities, give time limits, change students’ partners, make some breaks by pronunciation exercises, etc.
Why:
• Students won’t get bored and will be willing to continue further work.
• Students will better perceive and remember the material when it is diverse.

13. Encourage students to use dictionaries (better monolingual) as often as possible.
Why:
• When students look the word up in the dictionary themselves, they are more likely to remember the word better (because they not only hear, but also see the word).
• Looking the word up in the dictionary, gives students additional information about the word’s pronunciation, spelling, shades of meaning and phrases in which the word can be used.
• It makes the students more independent when they not always rely on the teacher’s knowledge. Besides, the teacher cannot always know everything.

14. Be lavish in praises after every completed exercise or correct answer the student gave.
Why:
• Praising students with words like “Well done”, “Good job”, “Excellent” makes them feel smart and successful and encourages their further learning.
• If students make mistakes, say something like “Not a big mistake”, “We all make mistakes, it’s even good we do”, so that students don’t feel ashamed, confused or even guilty.
