The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) program is an opening course to the field of TESL for people who have no or little previous experience of teaching English to non-native speakers of English. Global Village English Centers offer the CELTA courses in Vancouver and Calgary.
About the CELTA Program The program is available as a full time 4-week course, as well as a part-time (evening) 12-week course. Both courses are intensive and expect full devotion and involvement of the participants in the studying process.
The Courses Offer • basic theoretical and practical studying of the ESL/EFL teaching, • various methods and approaches to teaching, • teaching of students with different skill levels and backgrounds, • observed practical teaching of non-native speakers, • video lessons and observation of the classes held by experienced ESL teachers, • continuous assessment and monitoring by the trainers, • feedback and advice on how to improve trainees’ knowledge and skills.
Course Assessment The participants are assessed both for their 100% attendance of the classes, full participation and eagerness to listen to and consider feedback given by trainers, improvement of their teaching and planning of the lessons, written assignments. A candidate will successfully pass the course with the grades no less than Pass, Pass B, and Pass A. On successful course completion the candidates receive not only a CELTA certificate, but also a reports describing personal accomplishments during the course period as well as performance feed back of a candidate, which may be useful for future employment.
How to Apply To be eligible to apply, the candidates must meet the following requirements: • be a minimum of 18 years of age (20 is recommended by CELTA administration); • have a native speaker level of English; • it is preferable to have an undergraduate degree.
An application process comprises: • Filling out the application form and sending it by fax or mail; • Completing a short pre-interview task, which focuses on awareness of language and principles of teaching; • Sitting an interview with a trainer from the GV center.
