Certificates
As with many things in Thailand there is an official answer and an unofficial answer to the question “should you get a TEFL or a CELTA qualification?” It's not necessary to have a qualification to teach in Thailand but it's desirable, as I'll explain.

Many teachers come to Thailand in search of good paid job, but they have not been involved in any kind of previous working activity; they are only native speakers of English language.  In some case it may be quite enough but sometimes not. The life in Thailand is cheap, beautiful and colorful, and it’s pleasant to live in the capital of the country, in Bangkok.

A lot of newcomers are eager to stay in the country, and eventually they get jobs. If you are experienced, you have working experience and have recommendations, you may search for well paid and comfortable place of working. Unfortunately, the salary in average is quite not high. However, if you want to earn a lot of money, and bring home a fortune, you are hardly to succeed in it.

If you want to work officially in Thailand you need to have a TEFL certificate in order to get your teachers license, which you need for work permission. Your salary will increase in case of obtaining the proper certificate. If you want to get a substantial sum of money, you are to get a certificate. It’s not only money. You can take TEFL. If you decide to teach elsewhere, the certificate will earn you more money and help you develop your teaching skills.
