Living in Malaysia

Most teaching positions and work opportunities can be found in the capital of Malaysia Kuala Lumpur. It is a modern developing city with skyscrapers, highways, shopping centres and other public facilities. The problems that the city faces include overcrowded buses, shortcomings in the sphere of service and some other typical for a developing city.

livingIt is a common thing to hear Malaysians speaking in English (not always perfect but understandable). There are four daily English newspapers, several TV channels and many radio stations broadcasting in English. British English is preferred to American variant, that is why Americans may have to adjust themselves.

The majority of Malay are moderate Muslims, which means that they don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. There are some sensitive topics that should be avoided including religion, politics and sex. Malaysia is known to be a peaceful place to live in, where harmony and stability prevail.  Although there are different minority groups, most people who live in Malaysia spend a lot of time eating, which is a peculiar thing one has to get used to.

Working in Malaysia will not be easy if you choose to teach EFL here. The conditions will usually be such that you will have to work long hours to earn enough to live here. However, there are advantages, such as:

• In Malaysia you will get a chance to experience a variety of cultures
• There are splendid landscapes you can see and places you can visit and have a rest at (islands, for example)
• You can travel to Singapore or Thailand easily using bus, train or plane
• There is no language problem, since most people speak at least low level of English
• The culture is unique, completely different from the western style, and surely worth experiencing.
