Programs Types

 The majority of English language foreign teachers work for privately owned schools and other educational establishments (Hakwons in Korean). There are, however, other institutions where the foreign specialists are welcome:

1. in house language programs (corporate);
2. universities of foreign languages;
3. university departments;
4. public schools;
5. research institutes;
6. marketing and advertising companies.

Hakwons
Seoul is not only the capital of the country but also the main centre of private foreign language institutions.  Some of these institutes are well known and have many sub departments, while still there are many not so influential and they disappear quickly. The competition among foreign language teaching institutes is very big and maybe because of that the many of weak ones collapse. Many of the more marginal businesses open their doors, employ less qualified personal, advertise for students, offer classes for a month or so, and then close. So consider this matter carefully.

Many schools hire foreigners (American, British, Canadian, New Zealander and Australian) for conversation class activities in order to improve communicational skills of the students.  For some instructors the accommodation is provided. The full time teacher is expected to work for approximately 20-30 hours a week. Most classes are conducted in the evening and in the morning; so many instructors have free time in the afternoon. The students groups are most commonly the size of 10-15 people — usually university students or businesspeople who are determined to improve their business English. There are after school lessons that are held for children beginning from the age of 5.

All the teachers are illegible for health insurance service during their stay in the foreign country and severance pay on completion of a one-year contract, but some institutes do not preserve these rules. The average monthly salary is currently about 1.8 to 2 million a month (in major cities) or about 1.5 to 1.6 million won a month (in a small franchise).

Corporate In-House Language Programs
A lot of big corporate groups have their own in-house language programs. A foreign instructor can expect to work for more than 30 hours, working irregular hours all day from early in the morning to late at night. The majority of such programs require a student to work from 3 to 6 month. Some programs are made so that they can offer an instructor full package of benefits, including accommodation, but there are cases when its not offered and the instructor should either find place of living somewhere not far from working place or make long trips to his job finding accommodation in the far part of Seoul. The average monthly salary in such programs is currently about 2 to 2.5 million won. Recently many chaebols have reduced or cancelled their in-house programs due to financial restraints.
