passportUnlike other Asian destinations, where lax employers allow anyone with a passport from an English-speaking country to get a job without the proper visa. Hong Kong is quite a different place.

Citizens of Australia and New Zealand don’t need a working visa, but all the rest including Americans, Canadians and British need to apply for a visa. No matter what your nationality is, you need to apply in advance. All additional information you can find on Hong Kong official web site.

Hong Kong has some of the highest wages for English teachers in Asia. Part-time teaching can bring $30-$50 per hour. Full-time jobs in a center can run around $2,000 per month. Kindergarten teachers can net over $1,800 per month. English teachers brought in as part of the government’s English program start at $4,000 plus room and board.

International school teaching, which may or may not require teaching credentials but does require a Bachelors degree, starts at $2,300 at the low end and averages around $4,000 per month.  Many international schools also supply housing or a housing stipend. 

For those with professional teaching qualifications, the international schools are available for study in. Pay and perks have declined over the last five years but a new coming  teacher can still make about $2,300 per month, plus a housing allowance. Those teachers who are more experienced are to expect to get $6,000 per month.
