Transportation
Taxis. There are plenty of taxis available with relatively low fares. In Hong Kong Island and Kowloon the taxis are red, in the New Territories – green, while on Lantau Island they are blue and have the lowest fare rates. Although many drivers can speak some English, it is better to have your destination written down in Chinese characters. Most taxis expect you to pay little tip. It is also useful to know that New Territories taxis will pick up and drop off only in the New Territories.
Buses. There are double-decker buses, which you can take from 6 a.m. to 3 midnights and get to any part of the city. Besides, there are yellow minibuses with a red stripe, which drive throughout the whole city, pick up and drop off the passengers in any place except for the regular bus stops or usual restricted places. There are also yellow maxicabs that have a green stripe on the side. They drive along the fixed destinations, which are written on the front of them. The fares are fixed, and one should pay when getting in.
Trains. The railway system comprises three main networks: - The Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) connects Hung Hom in Kowloon with the border of China. It is 34 km long with trains running every 10 minutes in each direction. - The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) runs along the north side of Hong Kong Island as well as from Central across the harbour. It is a fast, efficient and air-conditioned underground system in Hong Kong with stations located by an X symbol. - The Light Rail Transit (LRT) links the New Territories towns of Tuen Mun Yuen Long. It is a high-speed surface systems, which functions from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. every day.
Trams. This kind of transportation is used for the leisure sightseeing. It runs east to west along the North side of Hong Kong Island from 6 to 1 a.m. On of the most advanced tram systems is represented by the Peak Tram, which makes it possible to climb Victoria Peak (1,810 feet) in just eight minutes.
Car Hire. It is not usual to hire a self-drive car in Hong Kong. The alternative for are plenty of chauffeur-driven cars, which can be hired as well as limousines offered by the hotels.
Rickshaws. Once they were the only means of public transportation. Now they are used mainly for fun rides and photo sessions. Rickshaw drivers usually stay at the Star Ferry on Hong Kong Island. If you want to take the ride or photo session, be sure to negotiate the price first.
